Sterling and Sliverplate

I have come across so many lovely items of silverplate tableware, I just have to share some of it with you.  I never thought I would like silver, you have to polish it, but the more I see, the more I love it.  My grandmother used her silver every day.  She said that was what kept it so nice and she was right.  I had a gentleman who came into my shop and bought my silverplate forks and spoons and made the most beautiful sounding windchimes from them. I think of how proud people where years ago when they could get out the good silver for special occations.  I have come to realized everyday should be treated as a special occation.

#S112 Large Sterling Serving Spoon

This large sterling serving spoon has a really unusual bowl.  It is ribbed all around from top to stem. I am sure it had a certain function but I just call it a serving spoon.  It is marked sterling on the back and has what looks to be an ornate F with a lion standing on its hind legs in the middle. You can see it also has small five petal flowers and curls on the end of the stem.

#K101 Two pearl handled knives

I have had these two pearl handled knives for years stuck in a drawer with other pearl handles flatware.  I have decided to sell all that I have right now.  The smaller knife is serrated and curved up at the end.  it has a mark on the blade and the pearl handle is attached to the blade with sterling.  The second knife is flatware with Landers Frary and Clark, Aetna Works on the blade and the pearl handle is attached to the blade with sterling.

#F201 Pearl handled serving fork

This fork is probably a meat fork but I don't know for sure that is what is called. It has four tines that cure slightly outward with a pearl handle on the end.  It is not marked sterling any where I can see but all pearl handled flatware I have seen is usually attached to the serving piece with sterling.  There is no maker marks so whoever made it is unknown to me.

#S111 Serving fork with curved pearl handle

This is another of my pearl handled treasures.  This serving fork has four tines.  the left outside tine is shaped like a pie fork and the base of the fork is a little bowl shaped with bumps on the sides.  It has a longer than most (I believe to be sterling base but is not marked) base that attaches the fork to the bent pearl handle.  Would be a nice addition to any pearl handled utensils you might have.

#S112 Sterling Handled Tomato Spoon

I have seen this spoon called a tomato spoon or a cranberry spoon.  When silver became plentiful from Nevada, silverware companies started making every kind of utensil imaginable.  There were hundreds of pieces to a pattern and since silverware was one of the few things women could own back then, they bought as many pieces as possible.  Finally a law was passed that limited the number of pieces to a pattern.   This spoon I believe to be silverplate on the bowl, there is a Pat. SEP 8.14 marking and the handle has Sterling Handle on it.  I'm not sure of the pattern but it definitely is old.
